The building was once a British headquarters and a jail, which gives the Partition Museum in Amritsar's town hall a weight the exhibits never have to manufacture. It opened in August 2017 to gather the stories, papers and objects of the riots that followed the division of British India, and it reaches wider than that: the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, the Komagata Maru, the Congress and the Muslim League, and what women lived through afterwards. Go before the Golden Temple rather than after. It is not an easy hour, and you will want somewhere quiet to sit at the end of it.
