Maharaja Ranjit Singh spent his summers in the palace at the centre of this Amritsar garden, which was completed in 1831 and named for Guru Ram Das, the fourth guru and the founder of the city. The complex is protected twice over, by the state and nationally, and has still been let down: a long-running legal dispute has held up conservation and restoration, and the condition shows it. Come for the garden and for the idea of a Maharaja summering here, not for a restored palace.
