One of the highest and most revered Sikh shrines in the world, next to a glacial lake surrounded by seven mountain peaks. Gurdwara Sri Hemkund Sahib is a renowned pilgrimage center located at an astounding altitude of 4,572 metres (15,000 feet) in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. It is sacred to both the Sikh community and Hindu devotees.
Why visit
At about 4,600 metres, the highest gurudwara anywhere, and open only from roughly June to early October. The last six kilometres up from Ghangaria are steep. The Valley of Flowers shares the same base, so most people do both.
How to reach
Nearest airport: Jolly Grant Airport (DED), Dehradun (292 km). Drive up to Govindghat via the national highway. A 13 km trek leads to Ghangaria, followed by the rigorous 6 km final ascent.
