Rajaji National Park, spread across the Shivalik foothills of Uttarakhand near Haridwar, Rishikesh and Dehradun, is a tiger reserve best known for its large population of Asian elephants. The Ganga flows along its edge, and its sal forests and grasslands shelter elephants, tigers, leopards, deer and over three hundred bird species.

When to go

November to June is the safari season; winter and spring are pleasant, with the park closed during the monsoon.

Why visit

Combine a Himalayan-foothills safari with the pilgrim towns of Haridwar and Rishikesh, look for elephants and tigers, and enjoy easy access from Delhi.

Cultural notes

Rajaji is named after C. Rajagopalachari and forms an important elephant corridor in the Shivalik forests, close to some of India's most revered pilgrimage towns.

How to reach

By Road and Train: Rajaji is reached via Haridwar, Rishikesh and Dehradun, all close by. By Air: Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest, and Delhi is about 220 km away.
