Jagjivanpur

A copper plate turned up here by chance in March 1987 and produced a Pala emperor, Mahendrapala, whom no other source had recorded. Digging followed from 1992 at the Tulabhita mound, and what came out of the ground was part of a brick vihara — Nandadirghika-Udranga Mahavihara, ninth century — with stupas, a verandah and cells with corbelled niches, plus terracotta plaques, seals and beads. What is exposed is brick, a partial ground plan rather than a standing building, 41 km east of English Bazar: a trip for people who enjoy reading a plan in the dirt, not one for a quick photograph.
