Ekachakra lies 20 km from Rampurhat in Birbhum, and it is a village rather than a site, which changes how you should plan. It runs about eight miles north to south and holds Viracandra-pura and Virabhadra-pura within its bounds, both named in honour of Virachandra Goswami, son of Nityananda. Nityananda Rama was born here in 1474, and that is what brings Gaudiya Vaishnava pilgrims. Hindu tradition also places the five Pandavas here during their years of exile. Walk between the hamlets instead of driving to one temple and leaving.

According to tradition, this is where the third eye of Goddess Sati fell when Lord Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra divided her body. Here the Goddess is worshipped as Tara (Chandi), and her guardian Bhairava (a form of Shiva) as Chandrachuda. Shakti Peethas are among the holiest pilgrimage sites for devotees of the Goddess, drawing pilgrims especially during Navratri and Durga Puja. Each is tied to the legend of Sati, whose body parts fell across the Indian subcontinent and beyond, sanctifying the ground where they landed.

There is no safari on land here; it is all done from the water, on licensed multi-deck passenger boats that work along the thick roots of the Sundari trees. The core reserve also holds saltwater crocodiles, water monitors and river dolphins.
