A district headquarters on the Tammileru, and a working town rather than a sightseeing one — worth an hour if you are already crossing this part of southeastern Andhra Pradesh, not a detour on its own. The layers are the interest. Settlement here goes back to the second century CE; it was a town of consequence under the Qutub Shahis in the sixteenth century, passed to the Mughals in the seventeenth and to the Nawab of Hyderabad in the eighteenth, and the British made it capital of the Northern Circars early in the nineteenth. Its older names were Helapuri and Ellore.
