Gaya's Shraddha rites turn on this temple, which means most people around you are performing last rites for their dead rather than sightseeing. Behave accordingly. At the centre is a 40-centimetre footprint cut into a block of basalt, the Dharmasila, held to be Vishnu's, left when he pinned the demon Gayasura underground. A fifty-kilo gold flag sits on top, the gift of one devotee. The Gayawal Brahmins are the traditional priests here; Madhvacharya, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Vallabhacharya all came. The Phalgu runs alongside.
