The tomb was finished on 16 August 1545, about three months after the man who commissioned it for himself had died. Sher Shah Suri founded the Sur Empire, and his mausoleum was the largest in India when it was completed: a three-storey sandstone octagon under a broad dome, chhatris at every edge, standing on a square plinth in the middle of an artificial lake and reached by a causeway. The walk out is the experience. The western wall is the only side with no entrance, being the qibla, and its prayer niche holds the best carving and tilework here.
