Mandar Parvat rises about 700 ft over Bounsi in Banka district, roughly 45 km south of Bhagalpur on the state highway that carries on to Dumka. It is a small mountain by any measure, and that is the point: the climb is a morning, not an expedition. Jains and Hindus both hold it sacred, which is rarer than it sounds for a single rock. A carnival is put on every year at Mahavir Jayanti and again at Makar Sankranti. Go on one of those two days if you want the crowd and the noise. Go on any other day and it is just the hill, the steps and you.
