One of the oldest shrines in Goa stands in Sristhal village, 7 km northeast of Chaudi in Canacona taluka, in a valley closed in on all sides by mountains. A plaque near the dome dates the building to the middle of the 16th century; it was refurbished in 1778. The idol is one of the cylindrical wooden forms local people call Nirakar, formless, wearing a metallic mask and a trishula, and about fourteen Mallikarjun shrines across Goa share that shape. Some sixty deities are kept here. The annual jatra is the draw, and it is unlike most temple festivals in Goa.

The Basilica of Bom Jesus is at the centre of it. The Basilica is baroque, and unusual for it: the facade is dark laterite, left un-plastered rather than finished. Inside are gilded altars and a marble and bronze mausoleum. Straight across the square is the Se Cathedral, one of the largest churches in Asia, built in the Portuguese-Manueline manner.
