The name misleads: nine temples called Nava-Brahma, every one of them dedicated to Shiva. The Badami Chalukyas cut them from rock between the seventh and ninth centuries, all east-facing and square in plan, and if the profiles look familiar it is because they belong to the same family as Pattadakal and Aihole. Hunt the friezes, which include early carved retellings of the Panchatantra fables alongside Shaiva, Vaishnava and Shakta themes. The temples were badly damaged and defaced after the 14th century and the Archaeological Survey has been restoring them since 1980, so expect repair work in the frame.
