It is the state's commercial and administrative hub, known for its Bengali and tribal culture, markets, temples and colonial-era landmarks.

By Air and Train: Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport, about 12 km away, has flights to Kolkata, Guwahati and Delhi; the railway station runs express trains to Guwahati, Kolkata and Delhi.
