Gangotri Glacier

Gangotri Glacier

Uttarakhand

Walk out of Gangotri town and the trail runs 18 km to Gomukh, where the glacier ends in a snout the shape of a cow's mouth — hence the name — and the Bhagirathi comes out of it. Behind that point the ice runs 30 km back into Uttarkashi district, to a cirque below Chaukhamba. The 2013 floods wrecked much of the trail and access has been restricted since. Devgadh, Chirbhasa and Bhojwasa mark the way, but only Bhojwasa has anywhere to sleep, so build the day around reaching it. Tapovan meadow lies beyond, under Shivling; most people turn back at Gomukh.
