The name means garden of roses, and there are roses here in quantity, planted along the water channels and fountains of a charbagh. At its centre is the maqbara of Shuja-ud-Daula, third Nawab of Oudh, who had it built for himself while he was still alive; the central chamber holds the cenotaph over his grave and his mother's. The tomb is square and double-storeyed, with an arched verandah on each side. Sharing the lime-plastered Lakhauri brick enclosure, through triple-arched gateways, are an Imambara, a Shahi Hammam, a baradari and a well; most people photograph the tomb and miss them.
