The name means hill of cisterns, and the cisterns are what to look for: rock-cut tanks hewn straight into the bedrock to hold rainwater for the monks who lived up here. The complex stands about 128 metres above the sea near Bheemunipatnam, roughly 15 km out of Visakhapatnam, and the ocean stays in view the whole way round. Monks chose the spot for its climate and for the sheltered curve of coast below, where ships could anchor safely and seaborne pilgrims came ashore. The stupa took monsoon damage in 2019 and was restored by 2021. Climb it early; there is no shade on top.
