Six kilometres on foot from the hamlet of Damthang gets you here, and the walk through reserve forest is half the reason to come. At 8,530 feet you reach a monastery with nobody living in it: the seclusion means no resident monks or nuns, so expect an empty building rather than a working gompa. Gomchen Pema Chewang Tamang founded it after training in Tibet, and later helped found the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology; the Maharaja and Maharani of Sikkim gave substantial help in building it. A small cave nearby held another lama in retreat for six months. Sikkim Tourism's tower, about fifty feet, stands on the peak.
