Do not plan on getting to the top. The stated intention is to light the tower in the evenings and let visitors climb it, but the last people known to have gone up were a former governor and his family, so treat the climb as luck rather than the reason to come. From the ground you are looking at a column raised in 1828 for Major-general David Ochterlony of the East India Company, for holding Delhi against the Marathas and for the Gurkha War, then rededicated in 1969 to the martyrs of the freedom movement and renamed accordingly.
