Know the dress code before you set out: men and boys of all ages must remove shirts and vests and go in bare above the waist. The temple was built in 1729, an atchala in the Bengal manner with a natmandir in front, and shrines to Kali and Lakshmi Narayan close by. Shiva is worshipped here as Tarakanatha, counted among the 64 jyotirlingas, and many pilgrims take a dip in Dudhpukur, the tank on the north side, which is believed to grant what is asked of it. Tarakeswar is a working pilgrimage town; expect crowds, not calm.
