Thirteen ratnas rise from the roof, each built as a lotus bud, and the plan inside is said to follow human anatomy — the whole building is a tantric diagram, Satchakrabhed, worked in brick. Raja Nrisinhadeb Roy Mahasay laid the foundation in December 1799 and died before it was done, the second storey up in 1802; his second wife, Rani Sankari, finished the rest in 1814. The deity is Hangseswari, a form of Kali. Two more temples are within reach — Ananta Basudeba in the same complex, and the Swanbhaba Kali of 1788 — so allow more than a quick stop. Bansberia around it is an industrial town.

There is no safari on land here; it is all done from the water, on licensed multi-deck passenger boats that work along the thick roots of the Sundari trees. The core reserve also holds saltwater crocodiles, water monitors and river dolphins.

Dakshineswar, on the Hooghly north of Kolkata, is the great navaratna (nine-spired) temple of Bhavatarini Kali built by Rani Rashmoni in 1855 — and the temple where Sri Ramakrishna served as priest, had his God-intoxicated visions, and drew the world to Kali's feet. His room in the courtyard's corner is preserved as he left it; twelve Shiva temples line the riverfront, and ferries cross to Belur Math on the far bank.
