Officially this is the Pandit Ravishankar Sagar; nobody calls it that. It is counted the longest and largest dam in Chhattisgarh, thrown across the Mahanadi in Dhamtari district, and what it does is unglamorous and important: irrigation all year, two harvests instead of one for the farmers below it, water for the Bhilai Steel Plant and 10 MW of hydro-electric capacity. Onakona, on the bank of the reservoir, is where people actually go and sit. Dhamtari is 17 km away and Raipur about 90, so this works as a half-day out of the town rather than the city.
