Chandigarh Capitol Complex

Le Corbusier laid out this hundred-hectare government compound as three buildings, the Palace of Assembly, the Secretariat and the High Court, with four monuments and a lake set between them. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed alongside sixteen other works of his for what it did to modernist architecture. The piece worth walking to is the Tower of Shadows, an experiment built so that no ray of sun enters from any angle; its north face is left open because the sun never comes from there. Concrete at this scale is unforgiving in flat midday light.
