Partition split a museum in two. Most of what stands here came from the Central Museum in Lahore, and when the collections were divided on 10 April 1948 Pakistan kept sixty per cent while India's forty per cent ended up in Chandigarh, opened as this museum on 6 May 1968 by M. S. Randhawa. The Gandharan sculpture is the reason to come, one of the largest holdings of it in the world, along with Pahari and Rajasthani miniatures, which reward standing close and giving them time.
