No other national park in the world floats. The surface here is phumdi, mats of decomposed plant material, and the forty square kilometres of it are an inseparable part of Loktak Lake rather than a park beside it. The place was set aside in 1966 as a sanctuary for the endangered Eld's deer, the state animal of Manipur, and gazetted a national park in 1977. UNESCO holds it on the tentative list as the Keibul Lamjao Conservation Area, a larger boundary taking in the Loktak buffer and Pumlen Pat. Go for the deer; the park exists because of them.
