Maibam Lotpa Ching, the Red Hills, carries a museum to the Battle of Imphal and the other fighting that crossed Manipur between March and July 1944. What makes it unusual is who pays for it: Japan's Nippon Foundation, working with the state government and the 2nd World War Imphal Campaign Foundation. The piece people stand longest in front of is a sheet of Japanese calligraphy, the character for peace, brushed by Shinzo Abe when he was prime minister. It took India's Best Design Award in 2019, which for a museum this far off the usual circuit is reason enough to go.
