Of all the old stone in Bhubaneswar, this is the piece still fully in use: Lingaraja is active in worship where most of the city's temples are not, and that changes what a visit feels like. It is the largest temple here, its central tower 180 ft, and the clearest statement of Kalinga building anywhere in the city, with four parts, vimana, jagamohana, natamandira and bhoga-mandapa, stepped in height. The compound wall encloses 108 further shrines. Look for the images of Vishnu inside a Shiva temple, a trace of the Ganga rulers who added to what the Somavamsi kings began.
