Small, low, and about 40 ft to the top of its spire, this is nonetheless the best-preserved early temple in Odisha, which is why anyone serious about Kalinga architecture starts here rather than at Lingaraja. Built around 650 CE, it was the first to add a jagamohana in front of the sanctum; everything earlier was sanctum alone. It is also the first in Bhubaneswar to carry the Saptamatrikas, and there are Shakta figures all over a temple dedicated to Shiva. ASI keeps it and charges a ticket. Parashurashtami, its main festival, falls in June or July.

Puri is an ancient holy city on the Bay of Bengal coast in Odisha, and one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage towns. Everything here turns on the 12th-century Shree Jagannath Temple, whose deities — Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra — are carved in wood rather than stone, a form found nowhere else. The city runs from the crowded Grand Road, thick with pilgrims, down to the wide sand of Puri Beach. The temple's ancient rituals set the rhythm of the place, and in mid-summer the whole city gives itself over to the historic Rath Yatra chariot festival, which draws crowds from around the world.

The Konark Sun Temple is a 13th-century temple near the Bay of Bengal coast in Odisha's Puri district, built in dark khondalite stone as a giant chariot for the sun god Surya — complete with 24 carved stone wheels and seven straining horses. The main tower collapsed long ago, but the surviving audience hall (Jagamohan) still stands amid lawns, its walls covered in fine relief carvings of celestial figures, processions and everyday life.
