Roopkund

Skeleton Lake earns the name. Hundreds of human bones lie at the edge of this small tarn at 5,020 m, and when the snow melts you can see them on the bottom, which is only about three metres down; the water is seldom more than forty metres across. The old story was one hailstorm in the 9th century, but later research found three distinct ancestry groups who died in two separate events, around 800 CE and 1800 CE. It freezes over in winter. The walk in, between Trishul and Nanda Ghunti through rock-strewn glaciers, is popular and high enough to take seriously.
