The ring of peaks around the Gangotri Glacier is a climbers' arena first. Thalay Sagar, Meru and Shivling have each produced ascents good enough for a Piolet d'Or, and Thalay Sagar's rock spire is probably the hardest summit in the group. For everyone else the reward is one view: Shivling, 6,543 m and twin-summited, seen from Gaumukh at the mouth of the glacier, where the pilgrim trail ends. It is a symbol of Shiva and the most revered peak here. Chaukhamba I, at 7,138 m, is the tallest, but not the one you will remember.
