Nehru lived here for sixteen years and died here in May 1964. Before that it was Flagstaff House, put up in 1930 for the commander-in-chief of the British Indian Army by Robert Tor Russell, the architect who also gave Delhi Connaught Place. Indira Gandhi turned it into a museum, and it has been collecting institutions ever since: the Prime Ministers' Museum and Library, the Pradhan Mantri Sangrahalaya, the Nehru Memorial Fund. The grounds cover twelve hectares and are the quietest part of the visit. Give the cabinets of foreign gifts less of your time than the house itself.
