The Red Fort (Lal Qila) is a massive red-sandstone Mughal fortress-palace in Old Delhi, built as the residence of the Mughal emperors and the seat of the Mughal capital after it shifted from Agra. It is one of India's most recognized monuments, famous as the site from which the Prime Minister addresses the nation every Independence Day.

A short history

Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned the fort after moving the Mughal capital from Agra to Delhi; construction began in 1638 and was completed on 6 April 1648, designed under Ustad Ahmad Lahori, who also worked on the Taj Mahal. Aurangzeb later added the Moti Masjid (Pearl Mosque). In 1739 the Persian invader Nadir Shah plundered the fort, seizing treasures including the Peacock Throne. Between 1760 and 1803 the fort passed through Maratha, Jat, and Sikh control before the British took Delhi in 1803. The last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar, ruled from here and became a figurehead of the 1857 Indian Rebellion before being exiled. After the rebellion, British forces demolished roughly 80% of the fort's structures; Viceroy Lord Curzon undertook restoration from 1899-1905. The INA trials were held here in 1945-46, and on 15 August 1947 Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the Indian flag above the Lahore Gate, starting an annual tradition. The fort was transferred to the Archaeological Survey of India in 2003. UNESCO inscribed the "Red Fort Complex" as a World Heritage Site in 2007. Delhi is not one city, it is seven of them stacked on the same ground, and the reason first visits go wrong is trying to see it as one place. Old Delhi and Lutyens' Delhi are ten minutes apart on the Metro and belong to different centuries. Give each a separate morning rather than stitching them together — the whiplash is what exhausts people. Start in Shahjahanabad early, before the Chandni Chowk lanes fill and the rickshaws stop being able to move at all. Jama Masjid's southern minaret is worth the climb for the one view that makes the layout of the old city legible from above. The Metro is genuinely excellent and will save you hours; use it and ignore anyone who tells you Delhi traffic is unavoidable. On Thursday evenings there is qawwali at Nizamuddin Dargah, which is the single most affecting hour in the city and costs nothing. Be honest with yourself about when you come. From late October into January the air is often severely polluted, and no amount of planning fixes a week you spend indoors with a headache. February and March are the reward months.
