Swaminarayan Akshardham on the Yamuna's east bank is modern India's grandest act of temple-building — a pink sandstone and white marble mandir raised in just five years by volunteers and artisans working from ancient shilpa texts. 234 carved pillars, 20,000 sculpted figures, a colonnade of 148 stone elephants and the gilded murti of Bhagwan Swaminarayan lead out to exhibitions, a boat ride through Indian civilisation, and the evening musical fountain.

How to reach

Akshardham metro station (Blue Line) is at the gate, 6 km from Connaught Place. Closed Mondays; phones and cameras are not allowed inside (free lockers at the entrance).
