Tughlaqabad is the colossal abandoned third city of Delhi, built by Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq in the 1320s and deserted within years — blamed by legend on the curse of the Sufi saint Nizamuddin Auliya: 'may it be inhabited only by herdsmen'. Its cyclopean sloping walls, sky-high bastions and ruined citadel stretch for kilometres of scrub, with the sultan's red-and-white tomb standing across the old causeway.
