Shah Jahan received courtiers and state guests in this hall of marble piers, 90 by 67 feet, and what stands now is the frame of that room rather than the room itself. The rebellion of 1857 emptied it — throne, carpets, everything — and the silver and gold ceiling had already been stripped by the empire's own money troubles; the one overhead went up in 1911. Look low rather than up. The floral inlay on the lower piers is the original work, and restorers have brought the gilding back on one front pillar so you can compare the two.
