Seventeen years of building, from 1912 to 1929, produced 340 rooms and two and a half kilometres of corridor at the top of Raisina Hill. Lutyens and Baker designed it for a viceroy; a president has lived in it since India became a republic, and the estate around it runs to 320 acres. The view most people get is the long one, from the east end of Rajpath, and it is the right one — the building was placed on the hill to be read at that distance, and the dome carries better from far away than the detail does up close.
