Thirteen instruments, no lenses. Sawai Jai Singh built these to read the sky with the naked eye and to correct the calendar and the astronomical tables, and the work is now dated to 1724 — the plaque on site says 1710 and is simply wrong, having been put up in 1910. Find the Samrat, Ram, Jai Prakash and Misra Yantras and work out what each one measures before you read anything about them. That is the whole pleasure of the place, and it takes half an hour rather than a morning. They had already decayed badly by 1857.
