Ninety per cent of the Yamuna leaves the river at this point, pushed into the Western and Eastern Yamuna canals; the remaining tenth carries on down the old bed. The concrete barrage is 360 m long, with ten main floodgates and eight undersluices, and it was built between 1996 and 1999 to replace the Tajewala barrage of 1873, three kilometres downstream and now out of service. Bring binoculars rather than a camera — the small reservoir behind it holds 31 species of waterbird, and that, not the engineering, is what will hold you for an hour.
