The sculptures here get this site called the Khajuraho of North India, which sets an expectation the ruins cannot meet. What survives are fragments, carved under the Gurjara-Pratiharas between the 8th and 11th centuries, broken up in the Mughal period under Aurangzeb and dug out again only in 1974. Taken on their own terms they are worth an hour. The 17th-century Pinjore gardens sit right next door, and an old baoli nearby still has Hindu pillars in it. Come for the pairing — the gardens carry the visit.
