Surajkund is an ancient stepped reservoir near Faridabad, Haryana, said to have been built in the 10th century by Tomar king Suraj Pal as a sun-worship site. Its amphitheatre-shaped, semicircular stone embankment is about 130 metres across, and the site is best known today as home to the annual Surajkund International Crafts Mela.

When to go

The Surajkund International Crafts Mela runs 1-15 February each year; cooler months from October to March are generally most comfortable for visiting.

See the unusual stepped, amphitheatre-shaped ancient reservoir, and if timed right, attend the Surajkund International Crafts Mela, a major fortnight-long fair for Indian and international handicrafts, textiles and folk performances.

How to reach

By Road: Surajkund is about 8 km from South Delhi and close to Faridabad and Gurugram. By Air and Train: Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi is the nearest airport, and Faridabad and Ballabgarh are the nearest railway stations.

Bhadrakali Temple (Kurukshetra) in Thanesar, Kurukshetra, Haryana is one of the Shakti Peethas, the sacred shrines of the Divine Mother in the Shakta tradition of Hinduism. According to tradition, this is where the **ankle bone** of Goddess Sati fell when Lord Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra divided her body. Here the Goddess is worshipped as **Savitri (Bhadrakali)**, and her guardian Bhairava (a form of Shiva) as **Sthanu**. Shakti Peethas are among the holiest pilgrimage sites for devotees of the Goddess, drawing pilgrims especially during Navratri and Durga Puja. Each is tied to the legend of Sati, whose body parts fell across the Indian subcontinent and beyond, sanctifying the ground where they landed.
