What was an island in the Yamuna in 1546 is dry ground now, and the fort Salim Shah Suri raised on it sits inside the Red Fort Complex. He built it while his father's Sur dynasty held Delhi and the Mughals were out. Humayun, the emperor they had displaced, is said to have camped here three days before taking Delhi back; Shah Jahan and other Mughals are believed to have used it while Shahjahanabad went up. Aurangzeb turned it into a prison and the British kept it as one after 1857. See it as part of the Red Fort, not as a stop of its own.
