Delhi calls it Lohe-ka-Pul, the iron bridge, and it has been carrying traffic since 1867. Trains run on the upper deck between Old Delhi and Shahdara stations; road traffic goes underneath on the lower one. It was the last link in the railway between Kolkata and Delhi, which is the only reason a structure this heavy exists at this spot: twelve spans of steel truss, a little over 800 metres end to end. This is not a monument with a ticket and a lawn. It is a working crossing, and it looks best from the bank, sighting along the trusses, rather than from inside the traffic.
