Ordinary petitioners got their hearing in this hall. The emperor sat in the marble canopy set into the eastern wall, his prime minister took petitions from the inlaid dais below it, and a gold-plated railing kept everyone at the proper distance. The hall runs 100 by 60 feet, twenty-seven bays of columns carrying arches under sandstone beams, with nine engraved arches across the front. Go right up to the wall behind the canopy: the pietra dura panels there are the finest work in the building, and most visitors photograph the façade instead and leave.
