An extinct volcano standing on its own at the north-western end of the Aravallis, 740 m above sea level and rising 345 to 470 m off the plain around it. The lava crater is still legible at the top, which is the whole point of the climb — the cone shape only reads from up there. Temples, a masonry pond, caves and the ruins of a fort share the summit, and the hill is among the oldest Vedic sites in Haryana, tied in the texts to Chyavana Rishi and to the first making of Chyavanprash. It is a proper climb; start early.

The shed dates to 1893 and is the only steam locomotive shed left standing in India, which would be reason enough — but the thing to see is the Fairy Queen, built in 1855 and still able to run, the oldest working steam locomotive anywhere. Several of India's last surviving steam engines sit here with it. It is 400 m north of the entrance to Rewari railway station, so you can arrive by train and walk, and it pairs obviously with the National Rail Museum in Delhi, 79 km away. Go for the machines; that is what is here.

According to tradition, this is where the ankle bone of Goddess Sati fell when Lord Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra divided her body. Here the Goddess is worshipped as Savitri (Bhadrakali), and her guardian Bhairava (a form of Shiva) as Sthanu. Shakti Peethas are among the holiest pilgrimage sites for devotees of the Goddess, drawing pilgrims especially during Navratri and Durga Puja. Each is tied to the legend of Sati, whose body parts fell across the Indian subcontinent and beyond, sanctifying the ground where they landed.
