There is no lake. Mining in the hills around it drained the embankment two decades ago and it has stayed dry since, so anyone arriving expecting water gets a basin with the Aravallis behind it. The Haryana Tourism restaurants nearby still work, and a flower show comes every spring. What is left of the appeal is the setting — this is part of the leopard corridor running from Sariska up to the Delhi ridge — and the company it keeps: the 10th-century Surajkund reservoir is 15 km north, Anangpur Dam a kilometre further. Skip it unless you are already out this way.

Shakti Peethas are among the holiest pilgrimage sites for devotees of the Goddess, drawing pilgrims especially during Navratri and Durga Puja. Each is tied to the legend of Sati, whose body parts fell across the Indian subcontinent and beyond, sanctifying the ground where they landed.
