Come for the rock, not the fort. Jaugada was a Mauryan provincial capital of newly conquered Kalinga, and its earthworks are genuinely hard to read on the ground — Beglar described towers at each of the four corners and on both flanks of all eight entrances in the 19th century, but with no photographs or drawings the remains barely resolve. What holds up is the central rock in the compound, carrying Ashoka's Major Rock Edicts 1-10 and 14 in Prakrit plus two Separate Edicts, cut around 250 BCE. It sits 35 km north-west of Brahmapur, near the Kaleswar and Rameswar Shiva temple.
