A Shiva linga sits at the top of this Ranchi hill, 350 feet above the ground, but it is not the only reason people climb. The British held the hill before independence and hanged freedom fighters on it; the old name Tiriburu gave way to Hanging Gallows. After 1947 a freedom fighter from Ranchi, K. C. Das, raised the tricolour here for the men who had died, and it still goes up on Independence Day and Republic Day beside the religious flags. Come on an ordinary morning, because Sawan and Shivaratri bring enormous crowds.
