Sultan Ghari

Iltutmish buried his eldest son here in 1233, and the result reads more like a small fort than a tomb: a walled enclosure with bastions at the corners, built in Delhi sandstone with marble adornment. The grave sits underground, in the ghari, or cave, that gives the place its name, reached by steep winding stone stairs and roofed with an unusual octagonal slab. The ground held a Gurjara-Pratihara-era Hindu temple before any of this. It stands out by Nangal Dewat, well away from the crowds, and that emptiness is the reason to make the trip.
